Ambassador Foley met with a group of about 20 students who are headed to Washington to serve as interns under the Washington Ireland Program.  The interns will be working with congressional leaders, in various government offices and with some private communications companies.

The students took the opportunity of meeting with the Ambassador to ask him about the current political situation in the US, work standards in the US and how he would compare his life as a businessperson with his life in government service.  The Ambassador took the opportunity to encourage the students to build friendships that they can carry through their lives.  “The temptation when you go on programs like this is to stay close to the other people on the program and spend your spare time with them.  I encourage you to make four or five American friends that you can maintain throughout your life.  I have friends around the world and it has made both my work and personal life much richer.”

The Ambassador also encouraged them to not only be actively engaged in their jobs but to also take advantage of being in another country and get out and enjoy the different cultural activities that the U.S. has to offer.  “You only have one life to live,” he said.  “Make the most of it.”
