AMBASSADOR'S OUTREACH

Remembering 9/11

On Sunday, September 9, Irish and Americans joined together at the Church of Our Lady Queen of Heaven, for a mass and ceremony to commemorate those who lost their lives during the September 11 attacks on the United States.  In addition to a Catholic Mass, there were performances of American songs by the Dublin Bus Male Voice Choir, An Garda Siochana (Police) Band, and the Dublin Fire Brigade Pipe and Drum Corps.  Deputy Chief of Mission, Robert Faucher, led a group of attendees from the U.S. Embassy.  Also in attendance were members of the Dublin City Council, the Mayor of Fingal Councilor Alan Farrell, and representatives from Dublin Bus, Bus Eireann, Dublin Airport Authority, An Garda Siochana, and the Dublin Fire Brigade.

In front of the alter was a poster with pictures of all of the firemen who had lost their lives responding to the attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania.  During the mass the Fire Brigade presented the colors of the United States and Ireland as well as the local fire brigade flags.  The male choir sang hymns and at the conclusion of the mass, gave a moving performance of “Battle Hymn of the Republic”.  In addition, the pipers performed “Amazing Grace” and the band performed “This Land is Your Land”.  The ceremony was followed by a tea/coffee reception for all the attendees.
