AMERICANS TO HOLD VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVES IN DUBLIN AND CORK
Ahead of this year’s hotly contested US presidential election between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, Democrats Abroad Ireland and Republicans Abroad Ireland will co-host simultaneous non-partisan voter registration drives on Saturday, 29th September, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM in Dublin and Cork.
At both venues tables will be staffed by volunteers who will assist American citizens in registering to vote and requesting their absentee ballots for November’s election.
Patti Shields, Vice-chair of Democrats Abroad Ireland and sister-in-law of Cork footballer Michael Shields, notes, “because of the extraordinary and ongoing flow of emigration between Ireland and the US, there are tens of thousands of people in Ireland who hold US citizenship and are entitled to vote in US elections. It is important for them to know that US citizens never lose their right to vote, no matter how long they have been away and no matter where in the world they may currently live and work. In addition, we are keen to ensure that US citizens studying for the semester or the year at Dublin and Cork universities exercise their sacred right to vote in this November’s election.”
Dennis Desmond, Chair of Democrats Abroad Ireland, continued that “our efforts to register voters are wholly non-partisan. We will help US citizens to register and to vote regardless of where they are on the political spectrum. Our goal is to maximise the participation of US citizens living abroad in the American political process. An easy to use website, www.votefromabroad.org, will assist US citizens to register to vote and to request absentee ballots for this November’s election.”
Tom Plank, Chair of Republicans Abroad Ireland, stated that "This Saturday, there will only be 37 days before the US elections on November 6. For those Irish-Americans who wish to vote, now is the time to register."
The Dublin Voter Registration event will be held near the top of Grafton Street and in Cork it will be on Patrick Street.
