Statement by Ambassador Daniel M. Rooney on Northern Ireland Agreement on Policing and Justice
I welcome the agreement on the devolution of policing and justice powers that was announced this morning. Martin McGuinness and Peter Robinson have demonstrated incredible leadership and unwavering commitment to a better future for Northern Ireland.
Taoiseach Brian Cowen and Prime Minister Gordon Brown, along with everyone who participated and helped draw this agreement to a successful conclusion, are to be congratulated.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has shown unwavering support during this process, also noted that this latest success in Northern Ireland points the way forward and will allow neighbors to live free from fear and to have the opportunity to fulfil their God-given potential. The United States will continue to help Northern Ireland “reap the dividends of peace.”
