NORTHERN IRELAND

On January 23, 2007, Secretary of State Rice designated Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky as Special Envoy on Northern Ireland. The Under Secretary assumes this responsibility in addition to her current portfolio. The transition from the former Special Envoy, Ambassador Mitchell Reiss, took place on February 15, 2007.

The President and the Secretary are fully committed to the implementation of the St. Andrews Agreement and to encouraging the full restoration of the Northern Ireland Assembly and devolved government. Secretary Rice greatly appreciates the efforts of Ambassador Reiss during his years of service as Northern Ireland Envoy. Under Secretary Dobriansky will continue the U.S. commitment to peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland at a time of renewed confidence in the process.
