Teaching in the United States

The United States Embassy does not conduct a teacher placement service nor does it maintain a clearinghouse of information on available teaching positions. Under the Federal system of government in the United States, education is decentralized and is the responsibility of each state, and teachers are employed under conditions established by each state and each local school system. To be considered for employment in a city or county school system or a private school, a teacher must meet the individual state's certification requirements for employment.

It would be advisable to write to the Certification Officer of the States Department of Education in the capital city of the state in which employment will be sought and request specific information about the regulations in that state. State Education Departments can also provide information about employment practices within their state. Application for employment should be directed to city or county school superintendents.
