Chef Cathal Armstrong gives cooking demonstration at U.S. Ambassadors’ Residence
“Today, you are going to cook for yourselves,” Cathal Armstrong said as he greeted over 30 children from Scoil Mhuire Primary School, Mount Sackville, Chapelizod, Dublin.
Cathal Armstrong was brought to Dublin by the U.S. Embassy to participate in the Bloom Festival, taking place this year May 28th - June 1st in the Phoenix Park. The established cook spent his childhood in Dublin and now lives in U.S. He owns three successful restaurants around Alexandria, Virginia and has introduced considerable green initiatives to each one.
Chef Armstrong and the enthusiastic group of 4th class pupils met at the United States’ ambassador residence on Wednesday, May 27th to learn about healthy and clean ways to cook food. The students were broken into groups, with tasks such as peeling onions or carrots and washing lettuce, only after washing their hands. Armstrong said that many cases of food induced illnesses come from the home, because restaurants know how to keep food clean.
After preparing all of the vegetables, he demonstrated how to ensure cleanliness before preparing chicken. He then seasoned the chicken and began cooking. Many of the children said that the meal was one of the best they ever had, ensuring that the event was a success.
