Renewing a Passport Issued More Than 15 Years Ago
To renew your previous passport that was issued 15 years ago or more, you must apply in person at the Embassy.
After reading the information below, please schedule the appointment.
You will be required to bring the following to your appointment:
1) DS-11 Form
Please do not sign the DS-11 application form until the Consular Officer instructs you to do so at the time of your visit.
Note that the online version of the application form includes instructions written for use in the U.S., which do not apply to your application in Ireland. Instead, please follow specific instructions below:
2) Most recently issued U.S. Passport/Proof of U.S Citizenship
3) Proof of Identity/Evidence of name change; if the passport is too old to determine identity, please submit government issued I.D.:
- a valid passport of any country; or
- a valid driver's license with photograph.
If a name change has occurred, please submit documentation showing that it was legally changed through marriage/court order or other legal process.
Note: Your Social Security Card does NOT prove your identity.
4) One Passport Photo – the photographs must be:

5) Provide a Social Security Number
If you do not provide your Social Security Number, the Internal Revenue Service may impose a $500 penalty. If you have any questions please call your nearest IRS Office. If you have question concerning social security numbers, please contact our Federal Benefits Unit.

7) Envelope
Stamped self-addressed envelope, size 6in x 9 1/2in approx., please affix to the envelope a €5.75 regular postage stamp or a combination of stamps to the value of €5.75. We will return your passports and to you by Express Post mail. Once we have received the complete passport application, it takes approximately five to six weeks for you to receive your new passport.
Security at the Embassy
Please do not bring any electronic devices, such as laptop computers, Blackberries, iPods, or large bags, such as backpacks, suitcases or packages to the Consular Section as there are no storage facilities on Embassy grounds. Security guards may hold small tourist cameras and cell phones until your departure, but there is no storage available for any other large items or electronic devices — please do not bring them at the time of your appointment.
