Galway "Boil Water Notice"

According to RTE News, numerous people in the Galway area have been sickened by cryptosporidiosis since March 2007.  This illness causes diarrhea and results from ingesting the cryptosporidium parasite which commonly appears in fecal matter.  Drinking water is a possible transmission route, although testing thus far at the water treatment plant has failed to detect the presence of the cryptosporidium parasite.

As a precautionary measure, the Galway County Council and Galway City Council issued a “Boil Water Notice” to water users in certain areas.  Please visit the website of the Galway City Council (http://www.galwaycity.ie/NewsFlash/WaterContamination/) and the Health Protection Surveillance Centre at (http://www.ndsc.ie/hpsc/A-Z/Gastroenteric/Cryptosporidiosis/Factsheet/) for details on how to protect yourself from possible contamination.   The Health Protection Surveillance Centre recommends to boil drinking water for one minute to make the water safe to drink.
